Quick update post to gather together some of the reviews of Issue 5.
Brandon Schatz, ComixExtreme: “If you haven’t been reading this book up until now, give it a shot when the trade comes around. You’ll love yourself for it, I know you will.”
Graig Ken, RackRaids: “To reiterate (analogy free), read the trade, by all means, and if you love it (which you likely will), then seek out the individual issues, and immerse yourself deeper into Kohl’s world”
Andrea Speed, ComixExtreme: “This is another great example of the diversity in the comic medium, and the kinds of stories that you can tell here that you probably couldn’t tell in any other way. We need more comics like this.”
Chris’ Invincible Super Blog: ” It’s another excellent issue of the best mini-series going, and if you haven’t already jumped on, you’re going to want the trade.”
Scott Cederlund, Popsyndicate: “It’s easy to understand the passion that’s driving Kohl’s journey even if you don’t relate to the specifics.”
Bart Croonenborghs, Broken Frontier: “The excellent story progression in conjunction with the outstanding stylings of Jamie McKelvie makes this a stellar issue.”
Now, let’s not blow it with the final issue, eh?
(Actually, Kitten lobbed me one of the key images of the series, and it’s a thing of scary beauty. So fingers crossed.)

Just want to add my consenting voice.
Wicked, a really nice melding of Old-School and New-School Phonogram (seeing issue 4 as a different kind of story)
Can’t wait to reread them, which I might, in fact, do right now.
Hmm.
Just one thing:
The zoom in on Kohl’s face, where you just zoomed in the image, looked really blurry on the third push in.
Was this intentional?
Also, wasn’t too sure on the Libertines scene at first, but now I’ve come to realise it encapuslates a lot of the ideas I love in this.
(I think I was mainly upset at Kohl’s bashing of the Libs, in all fairness.)
Re: Distortion. It’s an effect I lifted from Brett Ewins. Have a look at his work and you’ll see him using reiterated photocopies to get similar effects. Probably the easiest available would be either Skreemer or Bad Company, and both are worth reading anyway.

Comment by Jamie 03.13.07 @ 3:24 pmI thought it might be intentional cus I remember you saying something about medium as message?
Still, my pretty Phoogram getting blurry?
Makes me sad, though cool that it’s for a purpose (and something I may go and look into now)
…You guys going to that Bristol comic-con thing?
I fancy being all syncophantic again, and bonus, BKV is there.
Yes, we should both be there. Haven’t got a table, annoyingly, but we’ll be there.

Comment by Kieron Gillen 03.14.07 @ 3:33 amHow will that work, if you don’t have a table?
Anyway, cool, will convince my comic-loving slave of a friend it’s a good idea to join me and watch me salivate over my favourite comicky people again.
Just read Phonogram so far in its entirety again (despite lots of interruptions and the odd session of trampolining).
Really great stuff. Obviously.
Quite a few bits I didn’t get before, and noticed quite a bit of media-as-message stuff.
Also realised that the World’s End is, I think, the pub I watched England get kicked out of the last World Cup in.
Then legged it.
Legging it is always smart.
How it’ll work will be “Kitten and I wander around and/or spend all our time in the bar”.
We won’t make any money, basically. Which is rubbish!

Comment by kieron.gillen 03.14.07 @ 1:53 pmBut you WILL get to spend your time at the bar.
Hmm. From a financial viewpoint, I suppose, not so smart.
Comment by Alex 03.14.07 @ 2:24 pmWe’ve never been any good at smart financial viewpoints.

The RackRaids review was done by our very-own workhorse, Graig Kent.
