Filed under: Phonogram: The Singles Club

The second issue of THE SINGLES CLUB is out today in the US and tomorrow in the UK. Here’s the aforementioned five page preview. We pointed out the first review already, but there’s a second one from Sarah Jaffe of Newsarama:
Will compile more as they appear. And… oh, it’s Phonogram 2.2. Sorry about the delay. I think it’s worth it, and it should be less time until the next one. It could hardly be more.
And while we’re talking Phonogram stuff, Kieron did an interview with the London Student Culture Magazine Play wherein they ask him what his first comic was and he says…
“The first comic I wrote was called The New Dinobots at primary school. It consisted of a single copy which I rented to people for 20p a read. I’d managed to amass £1.82 before the Catholic school teachers noticed that the robots had enormous pentagrams drawn on their chests. They confiscated the book and made me give the money to charity. Controversial from the off, me.”
And continue in a similar vein.

Actually, I’d written Chynna a B-side but scheduling problems meant she couldn’t do it. Dan Boultwood did it instead, and it’s in Issue 5. You’ll see why I was thinking of Chynna originally.
And thanks!

Forbidden planet may have some more in Saturday but I’m not betting on it! That’s what I get for leaving it till after work, should have headed into town at lunch!
I made the same error in the same city. Of course, I should have tried to reserve a copy, but hindsight is 20-20.
Comment by Sam 04.30.09 @ 12:29 pmI got lucky at lunchtime, but only after being told in other fine Glaswegian comic shops that they couldn’t even reserve copies for me in future because Image don’t send them enough to fulfil the orders they already have.
Comment by Tony 04.30.09 @ 11:14 pmSo, is it co-incidence that 3/5 of the commenters in this are Glasgow-based, or is there some strange Glaswegian cult devoted to Kieron and Jamie?
Comment by Sam 04.30.09 @ 11:54 pmBecause people from Glasgow are awesome.
Re: Undershipping. That’s… disturbing. I’ll look into it when America gets up.

Comment by Kieron Gillen 05.01.09 @ 12:19 amTony - I *suspect* that might be a little porky on the part of that retailer, as Image don’t send out comics. Diamond, the distributor, do. We’ll look into it.
Comment by Jamie McKelvie 05.01.09 @ 2:31 amFair enough. Forbidden Planet had a shelf-full, but the local indie told me they were only ever sent two copies of each Image title, so couldn’t fulfil pre-orders.
Comment by Tony 05.01.09 @ 2:50 pmDamn if you gentlemen don’t have me poring and re-poring over every issue with this series. Loving the intersections thing: revisiting *that* moment in Issue One was totally grin-inducing awesome.
But the B-Sides… Being the slow yet analytical person I am it’s nice to have something quick yet subtle to digest a few times before I really get my head round it.
I’m going to leave you alone now…
Just hope the next wait isn’t as painfully long. Want more Laura before I pass away.
Third issue is now at Image, so definitely won’t be as long as last time.
Glad you dug it.

By “Ice Cream,” you mean Muscles, right? Right?! That’s my jam!
Comment by Jarret 05.04.09 @ 7:08 pmAlas, I mean the NYPC. Listening to Muscles now though.

Great read. I’ve read it about 4 times now and enjoyed (?!?) every punch in the gut. Myself, I haven’t listed to Tori Amos since my last bad breakup. It was so much of S*****’s life and we shared it while we were together. It could have been worse, she could have been obsessed with Bjork and the Sugarcubes and then bouncing to “There’s more to life than this” at club would have meant hopping on jagged calthrops for 3 minutes 21 seconds.
The Kate Bush single brought back some memories of incurring the ire of my favorite DJ trying to get him to play “Jig of life”. I love the final redemption scene of him/her walking away over the moor.
My only issue was the only TWO PAGES for Diamanda Galas. Only two pages? Great first page and I can imagine David Kohl impaled in her vocal thorns if he ever displeases that goddess. Then I read the second page and didn’t realize it was over until after flipping through the ads twice. AHHHHHHHHH! HUNGRY!
“Please sir, can I have some more?”
Oh and Congratulations and Thank you for getting this out faster than my other favorite comic **** ****** . And on a totally unrelated, separate, and unconnected topic, any chance of getting Chynna Clugston to illustrate a pop B side?
Keep it up,
Charles
