Hello
We’ve had a few people asking about where the second issue of the Singles Club is. Well, herein lies a tale.
We get the pre-order figures before the comic comes out. That lets us know how many we’ve sold to retailers in an initial shipment. That number basically tells us what sized cheque we can expect in three months times. From our pre-orders, we realised the size of cheque we could expect was no-size. In other words, come February, there would be no money to feed McKelvie.
So, Jamie had to take on some other work to do alongside Phonogram, which has pushed back the release date. It’s not that we’re not working: Jamie did over 30 pages in December. Problem being, it’s not all Phonogram. When will it be out? We don’t know. Hopefully by the end of the month, and on a better schedule from then on. We’ll keep you updated, and sorry for disappointing anyone who’s disappointed. We’re disappointed too.
Some people may note that we’ve sold out our print run – so sold more copies than were originally ordered. Surely that means the cheque we’ll be getting will be bigger than no-size. Yes, indeed it does. The problem is that we didn’t know that until too late, and to make sure there was some money for Jamie-eatings, he has to plan in advance for money to arrive. Just waiting until the last minute isn’t a way to live. In fact, it’s a way to starve.
Does it make us bitter? Yeah, a little. There’s a bit of a kick when Jamie – say – realises that by drawing a single page of Cable he’s going to earn more money than all of a Phonogram issue or that when you realise that despite everything Kieron did with the second series to make the singles attractive and unique, you just get the same pre-orders of the first series. Which also sold out instantly, before going on to shift 10K in trades. And when you realise that just having another thousand pre-orders would literally make it financially viable … yeah, it’s frustrating.
But educational. Our readers aren’t the sort to pre-order (Which is understandable – pre-ordering is a strange thing). Retailers, on average, don’t particularly want to support the book (Which, in the financial climate, we also understand). And we haven’t the status or leverage to do anything about either (Which we knew all along). If there’s a next time we’ll rethink it and do it a different way.
And before anyone gets stressy – this isn’t a prompt to do a “Save Phonogram” sort of thing. Phonogram’s fine, supports its printing costs, and we’ll get it done. A little slower than we’d like, but we’ll get them done. It remains worth pre-ordering later issues from your shop, if you want ‘em though.
Oh – and before we go, we’d like to thank everyone who’s bought the comic, written lovely things about it and those retailers who showed some faith in ordering. You’re splendid. If we ever meet, we’d probably be so sycophantic towards you that you’d wish you hadn’t been so nice.
And, to close, a song:

The business of comics blows my mind. I did my part by buying it!
Comment by Thom 01.06.09 @ 10:50 amMark E Smith is god. Is that song recent? I thought that Markie was in a worst shape than this…
Forget the schedule! I’ll buy issue two when it comes.
Comment by Pascal 01.06.09 @ 12:03 pmshit. not the first time i’ve seen this happen. hope Jamie gets to eat soon.
i’d click some google ads here, if you had them.
but even more seriously: it’s time publishers go full front to simultaneous digital downloads. Image looks like thr perfect place for this. it’s time. authors will benefit, publishers will too. everybody will make more money.
i know Image lets its authors do it themselves elsewhere, but under the ‘I’ umbrella all would make so much more.
Comment by Hector Lima 01.06.09 @ 12:59 pmI will keep buying two copies of each single. I have faith and patience and all that jazz.
Keep on keepin’ on
Comment by Miles 01.06.09 @ 2:44 pmDon’t buy much comics these days, but tried to track down a copy at a couple local retailers. No luck. they didn’t order, had no plans to order, PG didn’t sell well, but they’ll have the tradewhenitcomesoutyadayada… grrr… must trek into the depths of LA soon.
great song. was just thinking “wtf, The Fall?!? sounds like them but it doesn’t”
Comment by Neek 01.06.09 @ 9:11 pmSo long as you give us all a couple of days’ notice of the eventual release dates here, everything will be fine.
Comment by Tony 01.07.09 @ 12:23 amno worries boys. I’m pleased to say that I recently added Cable & Phonogram to my standing order, the former partly because of McK’s upcoming issues . . . plus I notice we have a Gillen Sabretooth coming, so I will be sure to grab that too
Seriously guys, pay your bills and buy your food so you can finish PG rather than having to work in Tescos or something. A little lateness doesn’t hurt, it just means I can re-read #1 a few more times (this is a good thing).
It is a shame you didn’t get more orders though, but I can’t help but think it’s becuase a lot of comics stores are closing. In my area we had 3 while PG was coming out (and my shop owner knew about it and got loads of copies that he would pimp to the cool customers). That shop is closed now though, and my current dealer is an old fuddy-duddy who had never even heard of it.
The real injustice is that I see kids all over my town that I KNOW would dig the socks off this book. It’s the kinda thing that makes you want to buy a bunch of copies, make a load of mix cds and just hand them out to the kids wearing the garish hoodies.
Comment by Jedeye Sniv 01.10.09 @ 6:44 amPS that song is amazing.
Comment by Jedeye Sniv 01.10.09 @ 6:46 amThat’s crazy - the comic shop in Brighton sold out of Pull Shapes and have ordered a load more - they’ve put them right by the door when you come in, so are really pushing it (They are also selling the Rue Brit Trade as well as all 6 individual Rue Brit issues as a collected pack right next to it).
I asked about Singles 2 and the guy shrugged, was as confused as me and he was in the dark about when the next will hit, so your post is timely.
Looking at all of that, I was thinking you guys would be on easy street - runaway success. But to hear you’ve had to push back the date because of a lack of sales is amazing to me? I just don’t get how the comic business works I guess - and there was me thinking the Games Industry was a bit bonkers…!
Keep up the good work KG!
Comment by JMG 01.13.09 @ 6:23 amMan, as a regular comics fan, I never really thought about that whole inner workings of the business…gawd, that must be completely frustrating for you when you’ve got a project that you love working on and just want to get out there. Well, I’m with everyone else and will definitely sit patiently to await Issue 2! I was actually browsing for something else in Forbidden Planet when I saw Issue 1…the artwork, the band references, everything just drew me in. I’ll have that! Just intriguing to see something a bit different on the shelves next to the latest issue of superhero faves! x
Comment by SonicSi 01.13.09 @ 8:45 amWas looking for this in the comics shop the other friday cus I reckoned it should be out but noticed you hadn’t been pimping it.
Yeah, gonna echo the wtf sentiment.
I was totally under the impression this was a guaranteed seller, and it doesn’t sound like it’s doing badly at all, but… comics business model sounds more’n a little wacky.
I guess I’d better brave it and put down a preorder for PG then…
Comment by Alex 01.14.09 @ 3:38 amHi,
Sorry to hear that you’ve had problems with the pre-orders being the same. I’m a Uk reader and completely new to Phonogram after 5 issues of the last series had been sold. I then tried to buy the issues I couldn’t and so bought the trade.
I think (in the Uk at least) you became big with non traditional comic buyers. I’m now buying 2 of every Singles club. One for me and one as a a present for the friend (another non traditional comic reader) who told me I would love reading Phonogram series 1.
The only thing I can think to help sales is do some promotion on the UK ‘alternative’ (god how I hate using that word but the only way I can think to describe the many disparate but interested in Single Club’s musical references) music forums. I present on a student radio station (subcity) in Glasgow, where I know at least 5 different presenters who have read it. Maybe an idea
Good luck with the figures and have fun in New York
Comment by alan gardner 01.15.09 @ 1:45 pmThe original series of Phonogram got me back in to comics! Knowing there was a second volume coming out was the sole reason I now have a box at my local comics shop! This comic is the best thing ever! I, for one, am a pre-order! Keep it alive (and live!)
Comment by Timm 01.15.09 @ 9:15 pmall my friends got a copy for Christmas and as i (just) manage to maintain a healthy balance between my social life and pop that’s a few comics sold. Alas i am no true comic fan, only one or two have ever driven me in to a super fan-girl frenzy so for that i thankyou : )
silver lining, i suppose i can stop bugging my local comic store owner, pestering for the release date of the next one.
best of luck with wild Poptimism.
Love Sophie

Comment by angryjohnnys 01.20.09 @ 10:50 amSo there’s a long story behind this (In brief: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen -> PerplexCity -> Phonogram -> Suburban Glamour -> Accidental Kieron stalking), but basically I’ve now pre-ordered my first comic. Thank you for my gateway drug, guys.
:)
Comment by Ross 01.20.09 @ 12:25 pmThanks for all the comments, folk. You are very lovely.
Angry: Ooh, interestink. I will go nose.
Ross: Long stories are the best of stories. Welcome to comics, man.

Comment by Kieron Gillen 01.20.09 @ 2:12 pmUgh, another week where it’s not on the release list, another scrabble over here to check and… sadness.

Loved the first issue! I would’ve bought two, but my shop didn’t have any to spare. Normally, I would say I “can’t wait” for the second, but I know it’s worth it. Keep up the good work. Yours in music… — N
